Strengthening Food Fortification and Business Development for Agro-Processors
Associate Consultant: Food Information Tanzania (FIT) partnered with TechnoServe Tanzania under the
Alliance for Inclusive and Nutritious Food Processing (AINFP) initiative—implemented in collaboration with
GAIN and USAID—to enhance business, technical, and fortification capacities among local food processors
in Tanzania between 2020 and 2021.
The assignment supported small and medium-sized food processing enterprises (SMEs) to improve compliance with food safety standards,
develop viable business models, and scale production of fortified and nutritious foods targeting low-income consumers.
Main Assignment Components
- Conducted business diagnostics and gap assessments for selected food processing SMEs in Tanzania.
- Delivered customized training on Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), Hygiene and Quality Control, and Product Fortification.
- Developed enterprise growth and sustainability plans linking SMEs to input suppliers, buyers, and financiers.
- Provided mentorship to improve record-keeping, financial management, and marketing efficiency.
- Supported alignment with Tanzania Bureau of Standards (TBS) and TFDA/TMDA regulatory requirements for fortified food products.
- Facilitated partnership dialogues between processors and service providers to enhance access to finance and technical support.
